Dr. Jerel P. Calzo (he/him) is a Professor in the Division of Health Promotion and Behavioral Science at SDSU, School of Public Health.
Dr. Calzo completed his undergraduate training in Psychology and English at UCLA and received his doctorate in Developmental Psychology from the University of Michigan. He received additional postdoctoral training in social epidemiology at Boston Children’s Hospital and the Harvard Medical School and completed his MPH in Health and Social Behavior at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health. As a developmentalist and behavioral scientist, the overall goal of Dr. Calzo’s research is to delineate the developmental course of health disparities connected to gender, sexual orientation, and other social determinants of health (e.g., housing), and to identify mechanisms that interventionists can leverage in strategic contexts to promote health and positive social development. In each of these lines of research, he uses diverse methods to examine the underlying mechanisms of health inequities, including complex survey research (e.g., epidemiologic surveillance, longitudinal survey designs, ecological momentary assessment) and mixed methods (i.e., quantitative + qualitative). In addition, Dr. Calzo directly engages and partners with youth, schools, and community-based organizations to develop and address responsive research questions. Dr. Calzo states that he loves collaborating with and training students across disciplines who are interested in social determinants of health and community-engaged approaches to research and public health practice.
In his spare time, Dr. Calzo loves traveling with his husband and kids, hiking, gardening, playing pickleball and table tennis, running, hula hooping, and photography.
